HARRIS COUNTY TO EXPAND ITS PUBLIC TRANSIT SERVICES
Harris County’s Office of Transit Services has announced it’s receipt of $2.2 million of special funding from the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to provide transportation services for participants of the local Disaster Housing Assistance Program (DHAP) who were victims of Hurricane Katrina and Rita. The new service for evacuees includes transportation to and from case-management appointments and employment interviews, and are available throughout Harris County by calling Harris County Transit at 713-696-1992 or by calling the DHAP Center at 866-497-6036.
Harris County’s Office of Transit Services was created in 2007 to design and operate a multitude of public transportation services in areas of the County which are not served by METRO. These include the County’s non-emergency Medical Transportation program for seniors and the disabled and Park and Ride service to downtown Houston from Baytown that may ultimately be offered from Pasadena and LaPorte as well. Traditional scheduled fixed-route and para-transit services will begin later this month in Baytown, and are being considered for Pasadena, LaPorte and Nassau Bay/Clear Lake. Additional information on services may be obtained by going to www.harriscountytransit.com.
